Just inside the doorway was a booth, eerily backlit with lime green neon that threw the shadow of the ride attendant huge against the rear wall.  The creature who cast the shadow was even more haunting. He wore a velvet top hat and a long, wine-red tailcoat like some old-time circus-master. He even carried a cane. The effect would have been hokey, ludicrous, except for his face, which was ghostly pale, lit by luminous green eyes that seemed to glow in the dark more powerfully than the neon. His hair was so black its curls appeared to melt into the shadows…
